Metallica's History

Metallica was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1981 by James Hetfield (vocals, rhythm guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), and Ron McGovney (bass guitar). The band's early sound was heavily influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Metallica's debut album, "Kill 'Em All," was released in 1983 and was a critical and commercial success. The album helped to establish Metallica as one of the leading bands in the thrash metal genre. Metallica's next two albums, "Ride the Lightning" (1984) and "Master of Puppets" (1986), were even more successful than their debut. These albums helped to solidify Metallica's status as one of the most popular and influential metal bands in the world. In the 1990s, Metallica's sound began to evolve. The band's self-titled album, also known as "The Black Album," was released in 1991 and was a commercial smash. The album featured a more mainstream sound than Metallica's previous albums, and it helped to introduce the band to a new generation of fans. Metallica has continued to release successful albums throughout their career. The band's most recent album, "Hardwired...to Self-Destruct," was released in 2016. Metallica is one of the most successful and influential heavy metal bands of all time. The band has sold over 125 million records worldwide and has won nine Grammy Awards. Metallica is also a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
