Lupus Erythematosus Tumidus: What You Need to Know
Introduction
Lupus erythematosus tumidus (LET) is a chronic, autoimmune skin disease that causes smooth, non-scarring, pink-to-violet-colored pimples (papules) on the skin. It is a rare type of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE), a group of autoimmune diseases that affect the skin.
Causes and Symptoms
The exact cause of LET is unknown, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder, in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. Environmental factors, such as sun exposure, may also play a role in its development.
Symptoms of LET include:
- Smooth, non-scarring pink-to-violet-colored pimples on the skin
- Papules that may be firm or tender to the touch
- Lesions that may appear on the face, arms, legs, or trunk
Diagnosis and Treatment
LET is diagnosed based on a physical examination and a biopsy of the affected skin. Treatment options may include:
- Topical medications, such as corticosteroids
- Oral medications, such as hydroxychloroquine
- Light therapy
- Lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding sun exposure
